Tony Whiting

Tony has been passionate about the “Expedition-experience” since he became a leader on the BSES Annual summer expedition to Iceland in 1977.

Tony is married, with two adult children and two grandchildren. His current role is in Higher Education – MBA Degree Programmes Manager at Leeds University Business School; before that he was Administrator at Leeds University and at Worcester University, before that for 22 years he was the Head Teacher of a Residential Outdoor Study Centre, and in the 1970s Head of Geography and Sixth Form Master at a Midlands state grammar / secondary school

Tony has been Chief Leader of three six-week BSES Expeditions to Alaska and leader on eight other BSES / BEG expeditions, variously as a Science or Adventure Leader, Chief Scientist, Chief Mountaineer, or Deputy Chief Leader: to Iceland 1977 & 1981; Norway 1980; Alaska 1985; Yukon 1990; British Columbia 1993; and Montana 1994.

Tony was Head of Geography in a Grammar School 1970-1980 (with responsibilities for ‘A’ level field courses, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and Outdoor Activities) and Head Teacher / Principal of a large residential outdoor study centre 1980-2002. He remains very active in Outdoor Pursuits both in the UK and other parts of the world.
