19th-21st September 2008
A weekend in Selside for members to discuss the Society’s future.
As a Society we need to ensure that we move with the times and make sure we continue to offer exciting and relevant experiences for young people.Â
We thought it might be nice to arrange an open weekend for members to come and talk about how they see the Society and which direction it might evolve in the future. Members will have the opportunity to share their views as well as to socialise with other members and reminisce with fellow expeditioners.
At this weekend we will have a chance to look at what YSES does and and to think about how the Society needs to adapt to changing trends in youth culture.
There will be a programme of themed activities and discussions.
Accommodation is available for Friday and Saturday night. The cost will be £10 + Food (TBA) per person. Members are of course welcome to attend for any portion of the weekend they can. If you are interested in attending, please contact the Society Administrator.
Will Patterson is driving a minibus from Leeds to Selside and offers places on a first-come first-served basis. Let us know if you are attending and would like a place on the bus from Leeds.
Non-members are welcome to join prior to attendance. Please download our membership form and return it to the Society office.
We met for our AGM last night in Leeds where our Annual General Report was presented. It is available for download here: YSES Annual General Report 2007-2008
The Yorkshire Schools Exploring Society will be holding it’s annual general meeting on Tuesday 3rd June at 8pm. The venue will be in Leeds at Asda House, Southbank, Great Wilson St. LS11 5AD. See you there!
We’ve decided on a venue and a date for our 2008 Open Day.
We’ll be having a “Society Social” on Friday 28th November, followed by a day of presentation preparation and practice on Saturday 29th November. On Saturday evening the open day comes to it’s exciting conclusion with presentations from the 2008 expeditions to Alaska and Mongolia.
All this will be taking place at Hesley Wood, more details will be available nearer the time.
What do you think? We think we need to liven up our image a bit so we can attract the bright young things that would like to go exploring the wild regions of this world given half the chance. Maybe our traditional looking “20 pence” logo is cute, but we need to engage the curious and adventurous using visual language that they understand and are savvy with. With that in mind we’ve had a couple of ideas drawn up, including a nod to the traditionalists with a simplified version of the current logo. We’d like to know what you think, so let us know using the poll below. Read the rest of this entry »
We’ve already decided that we’re going to Kenya in 2009, but hopefully joining Kenya as a 2009 destination is India. Planning is in it’s earliest stages and we’ll have to wait and see if the trip will be viable, but it’s looking quite good, so brush up on your Hindi, Dogri, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Kashmiri and more, and send us an email if you want to get involved.
As for 2010, well, we’re almost definitely going to return to the Grand Canyon for rafting and trekking - always a favourite in the YSES five year cycle. On top of the expedition to the Grand Canyon, planning is underway for a trek through the Egyptian desert and up to the top of Mount Sinai, and tentative preparations have begun into the possibility of a return to Peru, another favourite destination of YSES.
