In the summer of 2010 the Yorkshire Schools Exploring Society and the Derbyshire Youth Exploration Group will be organising a three week expedition to the Sinai Peninsular and the Red Sea. If you are between the ages of 14 and 18 and are in full time education you can be part of this unique opportunity.
We will travel to Sharm-el-Sheik in Egypt from where we will take an 80km transfer across the desert to Dahab on the Red Sea coast overlooking Saudi Arabia. We will be based at the Bedouin Moon Hotel where we will make preparations to enter the Sinai Desert on camels.
For the next 10 days we will be living in the desert according to the traditions of the Bedouin who will be our guides. We will wear traditional Bedouin clothing, cook over open fires and sleep under the stars. You will have the opportunity to visit bedouin villages and see for yourselves how the people have adapted to the 21st century.
At the end of the desert experience we will return to Dahab where, after washing away the desert, you will spend the next 5 days learning to SCUBA dive in the Red Sea. At the end of this experience you should be a PADI Open Water Diver qualified to dive all over the world. If you already have this qualification then we can negotiate alternatives for you.
You will also have the opportunity to visit Dahab and enjoy the experience of haggling for souvenirs and sampling the local cuisine. Before we leave we will also be making an early start by ascending to St Catherine’s Monastery to observe the sunrise over Mount Sinai.
This expedition will cost in the region of £1600 plus air fares. All expeditioners will be given advice and help with raising the funds required for the trip.
A series of training weekends will be organised leading up to the expedition to give us chance to get to know each other and experience some of the activities we will be undertaking. We are also committed to doing everything we can to make this expedition accessible to people with disabilities. Talk to us to see how we might accommodate you needs.
