Experience some of the outstanding scenery of the steppes and the incredible Mongolian cultureJoin the one month expedition taking in Ulaan Baatar, the Terelj National Park, and the Khovsgol Nuur region to the north.
In the summer of 2008 the Yorkshire Schools Exploring Society and Derbyshire Youth Exploration Group will be organising a four week trip to the land of the big blue sky! If you are between the ages of 14 and 18 and live or go to school in Yorkshire or Derbyshire, you can be a part of this trip of a lifetime!
An expedition of a lifetime! We will be trekking with local ‘Wranglers’ in breathtaking Terelj and Khovsgol National Parks. We will also work with an orphanage based in Ulaan Baator, who will be on a summer camp in the Terelj at the same time. We will spend a few days with the orphans organising activities for them that will include treks, climbing, hiking etc. and get an understanding of Mongolian life.Arrive and acclimatise – We will fly to Ulaan Baatar and have a couple of days acclimatising and organising supplies for the first weeks trek into the Terelj National Park, NE of UB.
7 day trek and project work – We will spend a day travelling overland to get to the park and meet up with a group of orphans on summer camp. The project could will involve organising activity days with the orphans in the park. Suggested number of days for this will be 7 in total including two days spent with the orphans, doing treks or climbing.15 day trek / journey – This will involve a day of overland travel to the Khovsgol area in the north. This involves the group splitting into two groups with each completing a crossover journey. One group will do a canoe trip on Lake Khovsgol meet up with the other group, then horse trek to the end of the journey, and possibly taking in a mountain en route. The other group do the reverse. Both the canoe and the horse trek will be of 6 days.
Departure – An internal flight will get the expedition to UB. Here we will have time to shop, before embarking on the Trans Mongolian to Beijing. Then fly back to the UK from Beijing.Our aims are to experience the varied landscapes on strenuous treks which will bring us closer to the wildlife and the culture of Mongolia by taken on local projects.
Applicants should be aged 14 -18 and in full-time education. This Expedition would suit members with a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to explore this wild and remote region.
Provisional itinerary. 32 days end-July to end-August.
Cost to members will be IRO £1500 (Inclusive of food/accommodation/insurance/internal flights/equipment hire/guides) plus return flights to Beijing (approx £800)
